Wholesale buying group Confex has created a bespoke retail division designed to provide improved promotional and field support to wholesalers that serve small shops.
The company, which also serves restaurants, theme parks and takeaways, has created separate retail and foodservice arms to aid its growth.
Confex chief executive Tom Gittins told Better Retailing a major part of the investment would be focused on boosting food-to-go support, a category offered by 75% of its 200 wholesale membership.
He explained: “We’ve been readying ourselves for the future with regard to the retail business. It’s still too early to reveal what our full plans are, but we want to help members and their customers grow sales.
“Promotional support will be one area we look at. We’ve partnered with Jisp to help with this area.
“Food to go will be one of the sweet spots for us, as it’s still a growing category. Soft drinks remain our biggest category, followed by crisps and snacks.”
The retail division will be supported by a “committee”, set up in 2022. It consists of key retail members who meet monthly to discuss development of areas including technology, marketing, own brand, distribution and operations.
