Retailers supplied by Nisa and the Co-op are to receive beef mince packaged in vacuum packs, echoing a similar move by Sainsbury’s which was heavily criticised by customers.
In a message sent to its retailers, seen by Better Retailing, Nisa said replacing the previous packaging with shrink wrap would use at least 55% less plastic. The wholesaler added the move would also help retailers reduce wastage by adding an additional two days of shelf life.
Nisa said: “The new packaging will also be recyclable via in-store recycling points at major retailer stores (as displayed on back of pack) with a further aim to ensure the packaging is widely recyclable by the end of the year.”
In February, Sainsbury’s became the first supermarket in the UK to vacuum pack its mince to become more sustainable. However, customers on social media demanded the multiple to reverse its decision, describing the appearance as “meat grown in a lab”.
