Charles Wilson is to step down from his role as Tesco UK and ROI chief executive after receiving treatment for throat cancer, but will continue to run Booker Wholesale.
Tesco group chief product officer Jason Tarry will replace Mr Wilson and the changes will come into place from July 16. Mr Wilson, who became Tesco UK and ROI boss in March, will remain a member of the Tesco executive committee.
A statement from the supermarket says Mr Wilson is in good health. "Following an operation to remove his tonsils in April of this year, Charles Wilson was diagnosed with throat cancer.
"During May and June he has been undergoing daily radiotherapy. The good news is that Charles has responded very well to the treatment and all the signs are that the treatment has been successful.
"However, given the nature of the illness and the need for Charles to remain vigilant in his recuperation."
