Camelot was fined £3.15m by the Gambling Commission (GC) last week for three online glitches that overcharged customers, underpaid winners and targeted problem gamblers.
One expert told Better Retailing the timing could create issues for any legal attempt to contest the GC’s awarding of the next National Lottery licence to rival Allwyn.
The glitches occurred from 2016 to 2020. One had users scanning QR codes on winning tickets told that they had not won.
Another resulted in 22,000 players buying single tickets online being charged for two tickets.
In the third, Camelot sent marketing material to 65,000 people that had signed up to GamStop, designed to help problem gamblers stop gambling.
Camelot reported itself to the GC when the issues were discovered, and acted “promptly to resolve them”.
