BREAKING: Morrisons exploring cash and carry model

Speaking at the FWD Live conference, senior figures from both Morrisons and Nisa said there was an opportunity in depot models

Morrisons is exploring a potential cash and carry model for their retailers while Nisa has not ruled out the possibility of a similar proposition, Better Retailing can reveal.

Speaking at the FWD Live conference in Manchester on 27 June, Morrisons director of bulk and international markets, Kaoutar Touihri, said the multiple was looking into depots as well as making more international foods available to wholesale customers and Daily franchisees.

She said: “Our strategy is to develop the convenience market and franchise model. For bulk and wholesale, cash and carry is something we are looking into. We would like to develop our base convenience and wholesale model first and then potentially move into cash and carry at a further stage.”

Responding to the same question about depot expansion, Nisa director of wholesale, Ayaz Alam added: “Our core model is delivered, but nothing is off the table. We’re always looking at opportunities to expand reach, whether that’s with existing partners and a model that may have cash and carry in it, or through acquisition. If the right opportunity comes along, we will look at it and consider it. At this stage nothing is on or off the table.”
