18-24 year olds ‘most sober age group’ – Portman Group

The alcohol trade body's latest annual survey found that 39% of 18-24 year olds don't drink alcohol at all

Young adults are driving the trend for low and no-alcohol drinks with a 9% increase in consumption over two years, research has shown.

A survey, carried out by the Portman Group in partnership with YouGov, found that a third of UK drinkers (38%) now consume low and no-alcohol alternatives semi regularly, up from 29% in 2022.

It also showed that almost half of 25-34 year olds, and 40% of 18-24 year olds consider themselves either occasional or regular drinkers of alcohol alternatives.

The survey also highlighted an increasingly health-conscious consumer with 29% of low and no-alcohol drinkers citing “health and medical” concerns as a playing an important role in their choice. 

Graeme Pentland, of Ashburton News, Gosforth said: “Alcohol-free beers saw a big rise last year, and Guinness 0% played a big part in that. More recently I had a lot of shoppers asking for alcohol-free wine. I got a couple bottles in before Christmas and was very surprised by how well they did.”

Matt Lambert, chief executive of the Portman Group said: “It’s fantastic to see low and no alternatives to soar in popularity, while helping to encourage more mindful and moderate consumption among UK alcohol drinkers.”
