New recycling collection service for retailers

Smiths News discusses its new scheme designed to help independent retailers rise to the challenge of managing recyclable waste

Smiths News

Smiths News has launched a low-cost daily recycling collection service to help independent retailers manage soft plastics and bulky cardboard packaging left over from trips to the cash-and-carry and stock deliveries.

Those taking part in the new scheme are provided with bags to put the recycling into. No slots need to be booked, retailers simply leave the bags out with their newspaper returns and they are taken away at the same time.

Collections are available as and when required. Some retailers might like several a week, while others only one. This easy-to-use, no-fuss service is available for a single flat-rate fee added to weekly news bills, with no ties involved and the freedom to opt out at any point. A special introductory price of only £3.50 a week is currently available for early sign-up.

Smiths News Recycle is a great way to support retailers by saving them money with a highly competitive, more cost-effective service than the one they might previously have subscribed to, while helping them free up valuable storage space.

Michael Williams, head of proposition development at Smiths News, said: “We asked our customers what it takes to manage a successful independent store and effectively dealing with waste was a key theme, as it is a real challenge to deal with and a significant cost.

“It made sense for us to utilise our delivery network and existing recycling infrastructure to help.  Fitting in with our own aspirations on sustainability is an added bonus.”

The collection service is now up and running in the West Midlands and the Northwest with plans to roll it out in other areas. Retailers wishing to take part should apply online at recycle.smithsnews.co.uk.
