OPINION: The Fed welcomes end to Scottish alcohol-display-ban plan – Jason Birks, national president

'The Fed had warned that shops could close if such naïve and unworkable plans went ahead'

Huge sighs of relief could be heard in independent stores the length and breadth of Scotland last month when the new first minister, Humza Yousaf, announced he was dropping controversial plans that would have forced retailers to hide alcohol products away in cupboards behind the tills or under the counter.

As this was an issue the Fed had campaigned long and hard against, we were pleased Yousaf had listened to – and, more importantly, appreciated and understood – our concerns, and has taken these proposals back to the drawing board.
