Independent retailers’ hackles always rise when politicians and news commentators use ‘supermarket’ as shorthand for any shop that sells food. 

It might save time in a soundbite, but it also implies the multiple retailers are the only places to shop – and we all know that’s not the case. 

FWD recently commissioned the Centre for Economics and Business Research (CEBR) to measure just how vast the wholesale sector is. The findings are quite staggering.
