Insight: What do store owners have planned for 2024?

The Better Retailing team finds out what retailers are excited about for the upcoming year

One Stop Stoke Aldermoor, Coventry

Expanding business and acquiring more stores

“We are expanding our business and acquiring more stores. There are plenty of opportunities in the market as many people are leaving the industry, and we find the convenience sector is growing. In total, we have another seven stores that we hope to open by the end of the year. The key factors are management and communication. Most of our stores are run similarly, which is facilitated by One Stop’s uniformity. Recruitment and training are handled with the help of agencies and which recruit adequate staff for us and the training is mostly taken care of by One Stop.”

Financial support for store refit

“We are seeking finances to refurbish our store due to increased competition, including a big Co-op five minutes away. The store needs a refresh, and we have created additional space by expanding into the garden. This expansion allows us to reorganize, enlarge the store, double our fresh food offering, increase cold drinks options, and introduce more eco-friendly products like refills. We plan to change the flooring and shelving to give the store a new look. You’ve got to take those risks as a retailer. If you re????it your
store, people will come to you just because of that.”

Opportunity for refit amidst Covid-19

“Despite plans for a store refit before Covid-19, we now have the opportunity to proceed. We aim for one significant change instead of several small ones, taking our time to ensure it is right for us and the community. With new houses being built nearby, we are extending and fully refurbishing the store. The entire store will be redesigned with new categories, focusing on chilled and frozen products. Additionally, we are considering entering the food-to-go market to better serve our customers.”
