Behind the numbers
  • Six of the twelve ales and stouts lines examined are charged above the most-common price by the majority of retailers. No line has less than 31% of retailers charging above the most-common price.
  • Sharp's Doom Bar 4.3% 500ml is the standout line in this regard. A full 66% of retailers exceed the £2 most-common price, with some charging as high as £3.19. That's closely followed by Newcastle Brown 4.7% 550ml, which has 65% of retailers exceeding £2 most-common price. It's a pattern that suggests there's an opportunity to grow profits on single bottles.
  • Brewdog 330ml four-packs also see retailers eking out extra profit. On Punk IPA, 62% of retailers charge above the £5.99 most-common price, up to £8.59. Hazy Jane has the same most-common price. Sixty-four percent of retailers exceed it, charging as high as £8.99. In other words, it's a brand with potential to make a significant contribution to your store profit.
  • It's a different story on John Smith's Extra Smooth 3.4% 440ml four-pack. Just 31% of stores are exceeding the £5.99 most-common price, and the highest price charged is £6.99. Markedly less than the Brewdog lines.
