A guide to writing a convenience store job ad and free templates you can use

From what to include to where to post, everything you need to make a stand-out job advert

A good convenience store job ad needs to perform a number of functions. Most importantly, it needs to stand out to ensure applicants know you’re hiring. This is true whether it’s going online or in your shop window. But while your ad needs to grab attention, it also needs to be informative and easy to read.

It’s important to be precise with the information a convenience store job ad contains. After reading your ad, potential new team members should know what you’re looking for, and what you’re offering. With this in mind, a job ad should quickly outline what the new employee will need to do, and the hours they’ll need to work. In the long run, this will save them time applying for jobs they aren’t qualified for. What’s more, it’ll save you time answering enquiries. The last thing you want is to spend time and resources arranging an interview to then find out the candidate can’t work the required hours.

Remember, it’s a competitive market for employers. A good convenience store job ad is as an advert for your business as much as announcing a vacancy. What perks do you offer your team? What are the benefits you offer? Why are you a better place to work than the local multiple? Answer these questions straight away in the ad. Doing so will boost the chances of you getting the best applicants to choose from.

Instore or online? Where to put your convenience store job ad

It’s also worth thinking hard about where you’ll place your job ad. Options include in the shop, on social media, or on online job vacancy sites such as Indeed or CV Library. All have their own strengths and weaknesses. What works best for you will depend on your business and the role you’re looking to fill. If you need someone local to do a few shifts a week, instore and social media could be a good fit. If you’re looking for more specialist skills for a more important role, online jobsites could widen your catchment area and allow you to target specific skill sets.

Below, you can download some example convenience store job ad templates. One is formal, one is more casual. The formal one is more relevant for more specialist roles. The causal appropriate for part-time team members who’ll be doing more day-to-day work. You can edit these to adjust them to your store, while the information on them can be used to build either ads you print out, or ones you post on social media.
