Retailers lose out on Booker’s Spend & Save scheme rebates

The wholesaler defended the changes, claiming 'the new 5% band has proved very popular with customers'

Smaller retailers have seen the rebates they receive from Booker’s Spend & Save scheme reduce by hundreds of pounds, due to adjustments to the system.

The wholesaler increased the top tier of the scheme by 1% to 5% for spends of more than £55,000.

The required spend for the lower tiers also changed. To qualify for a 1% rebate, retailers are now required to spend £15,000 to £24,999 compared with £10,000 to £19,999 previously.

The changes affected the ability of retailers with smaller stores to receive the same rewards as previously earned.

One store owner, who asked not to be named, told RN: “I’m several hundred pounds down, and I would have used this money to pay for things like wages previously.”

Another added: “We’re losing out big time and it means I’ll spend less with Booker because they’ve moved the goal posts.”

However, Vince Malone, of Tenby Stores & Post Office in Pembrokeshire, praised the scheme.

Lockdown restrictions in Wales have had an impact, but I’m still expecting Christmas to help us meet the 5% tier and earn more.”

A Booker spokesperson said: “Customers had been asking us to update our Spend & Save scheme and they particularly wanted a new 5% band. This is the first time we have changed any of the bands since its launch in March 2003. The new 5% band has proved very popular with customers.”
