Retailer reacts to baked beans TikTok craze

Newest c-store trend follows 'corner shop crawl' craze in April

Police have attempted to clamp down on sales of baked beans in stores following an increase in antisocial behaviour as part of a new social media trend.

Multiple videos on TikTok have surfaced online, showing youths throwing baked beans onto driveways, doorsteps and onto the tops of cars.

Police across the UK have issued statements urging shop workers to be aware of youths buying “large quantities of beans”.

Cops tell shops to ban kids from buying baked beans

In a statement, PCSO Michelle Owens, from Morley in West Yorkshire, said: “It has come to our attention that a new trend called ‘beaning’ has been started by groups of youths. This involves youths throwing the contents of cans of beans over properties. It’s very similar to the trend of throwing eggs at properties. If you work in a shop, please can you be aware of youths buying large quantities of beans.”

However, multiple stores have rejected the suggestion that it is their responsibility to stop sales of beans to youths. Ravi Raveendran, of Colombo Mini-Mart in Hounslow, said: “If the police cannot catch the children doing this, they shouldn’t be interfering with shopkeepers and our businesses asking us to keep an eye out. If the police want to stop this, they should do it themselves by going to the schools and talking to the children instead of putting the job onto us.”
