Basket value rises 10% in Snappy Shopper food waste trial

A trial between Snappy Shopper and Gander has seen basket value increase at participating stores.

Stores participating in the Snappy Shopper x Gander trial are seeing basket value increase by 10%, while 11% of orders include an item reduced by Gander as of Q1 2024.

Snappy Shopper launched a trial partnership with food waste app Gander in April 2023 at five Spar Scotland stores.

Gander is an app that promotes discounted food items to shoppers in a bid to cut food waste, and the collaboration with Snappy Shopper marks the first time a home delivery app offered customers the opportunity to purchase reduced-to-clear items as part of their shop.

Shoppers also significantly increased their basket volumes through the trial, as the item count with Gander items came to an average of 21.3, while without Gander totalled 13.7.

Snappy Shopper also revealed it will be extending the initiative across its network of retail partners.

Mike Callachan, founder and chief executive of Snappy Shopper, said: “We are thrilled to see the remarkable outcomes of this groundbreaking integration between Gander and Snappy Shopper. This collaboration not only demonstrates our commitment to enhancing the convenience shopping experience but also underscores our dedication to reducing food waste and promoting sustainability.

“By seamlessly integrating Gander’s platform into the Snappy Shopper app, we have empowered our customers to make more informed choices while simultaneously supporting our retail partners in their sustainability efforts. We look forward to further expanding this initiative across our network of retail partners, driving positive change and delivering unparalleled value to both shoppers and stores alike.”

Damien Corcoran, chief operating officer at Gander, said the partnership “drives more sales into stores”.

He added: “We are proud of our partnership with Snappy Shopper. As shoppers continue to feel the financial pinch, giving them more visibility and access to reduced-to-clear food, whilst diverting perfectly good food away from waste, just makes sense. Solving one of the world’s biggest problems of food waste, feeding humans with perfectly good food and creating thriving local economies.”
