The national lorry driver shortage continues to cause disruption to the supply chain after its reported nearly 60,000 licenses are still yet to be processed.
HGV licenses are among thousands of applications which await to be processed according to figures from The Department for Transport.
Lorry driver shortage causes waste-collection woe
Trudy Harrison, Conservative MP for Copeland and a Parliamentary Under-Secretary in the DfT, says that the total number of licenses that still need to be processed included “those applying for entitlement to drive both HGVs and buses.”
Harrison highlighted that the DVLA is “prioritising applications for provisional vocational licenses so these drivers can take their training quickly. The DVLA continues to explore opportunities to reduce turnaround times for paper applications.”

These applications take 10 days to process and people who are applying to renew a license can continue driving while their applications are being processed.
The driver shortages is an ongoing issue which began at the beginning of the summer and has continued to experience increased pressures.
The recent petrol shortages and the continued lack of drivers has caused many issues for convenience stores with many experiencing ongoing availability and delivery issues.
