Asda: when, where and how the giant is breaking into convenience

Asda will make a further move on the convenience sector by launching a “smaller format” store next month, Retail Express has learned.

The supermarket giant has signed an agreement to open a 12,000 sq ft store in north west London on June 28, the first format of its kind to open under the Asda brand.

The date was revealed after the Walmart-owned supermarket announced its worst sales figures in more than five years. It reported a 2.9% fall in quarterly sales last month, its third quarterly decline in a row. The supermarket follows the customer trend towards convenience and discount shopping.

Knight Frank, a commercial property estate agent, sold the Wealdstone location to the multiple for £7.8m on a 25-year lease that includes a gym facility and car parking to cater for Asda’s click & collect shoppers.

Currently the Wealdstone site only provides a click & collect service. Open seven days a week customers can order their groceries online and pick them up near the Harrow & Wealdstone tube station.
