Amazon and Deliveroo deny CMA claim

A joint statement from the two delivery firms claimed there is adequate competition in the market

Amazon Deliveroo CMA

Amazon and Deliveroo have denied claims by UK regulators that a join-up between the two companies could leave grocery stores paying higher prices for partnerships with online delivery firms.

The Competition and Markets Authority had claimed that Amazon acquiring a stake of Deliveroo would reduce competition. However, a statement by the two firms claimed that while Amazon Prime and Deliveroo both deliver groceries to the doorstep, one focuses on ‘weekly shops’ and the other focuses on ‘impulse’.

Amazon–Deliveroo merger could harm convenience store deliveries

It added that Deliveroo’s role in convenience grocery deliveries is ‘very small’ and suggested rival Uber Eats’ tie-ups with Bestway, Co-op and Costcutter show there is adequate competition in the marketplace.

A decision will be made in ‘late May’.
